We need to break the destructive linking of dependency with pathology and recognise that we are all formed, albeit in diverse and uneven ways, through and by our interdependencies.

Thus, in order to reimagine a genuinely caring politics, we must begin by recognising the myriad ways that our survival and our thriving are everywhere and always contingent on others. A caring politics must grasp both this interdependence and the ambivalence and anxiety it inevitably generates. Only once we acknowledge the challenges of our shared dependence, along with our irreducible differences, can we fully value the skills and resources necessary to promote the capabilities of everyone, whatever our distinct needs, whether as carers or cared for, noting the frequent reciprocity of these positions. Recognising our needs both to give and to receive care not only provides us with a sense of our common humanity, but enables us to confront our shared fears of human frailty, rather than project them onto those we label as ‘dependent’.

The Sick Woman is who capitalism needs to perpetuate itself.

Why?

Because to stay alive, capitalism cannot be responsible for our care – its logic of exploitation requires that some of us die.

“Sickness” as we speak of it today is a capitalist construct, as is its perceived binary opposite, “wellness.” The “well” person is the person well enough to go to work. The “sick” person is the one who can’t. What is so destructive about conceiving of wellness as the default, as the standard mode of existence, is that it invents illness as temporary. When being sick is an abhorrence to the norm, it allows us to conceive of care and support in the same way.

Care, in this configuration, is only required sometimes. When sickness is temporary, care is not normal.

Here’s an exercise: go to the mirror, look yourself in the face, and say out loud: “To take care of you is not normal. I can only do it temporarily.”

Saying this to yourself will merely be an echo of what the world repeats all the time.

I listened to the sounds of the marches as they drifted up to my window. Attached to the bed, I rose up my sick woman fist, in solidarity.

I started to think about what modes of protest are afforded to sick people – it seemed to me that many for whom Black Lives Matter is especially in service, might not be able to be present for the marches because they were imprisoned by a job, the threat of being fired from their job if they marched, or literal incarceration, and of course the threat of violence and police brutality – but also because of illness or disability, or because they were caring for someone with an illness or disability.

I thought of all the other invisible bodies, with their fists up, tucked away and out of sight. If we take Hannah Arendt’s definition of the political – which is still one of the most dominant in mainstream discourse – as being any action that is performed in public, we must contend with the implications of what that excludes. If being present in public is what is required to be political, then whole swathes of the population can be deemed a-political – simply because they are not physically able to get their bodies into the street.

Too many ppl in the notes not getting that the whole point of voting Saionji is that he would hate it. He would be seething and crying and shitting himself over people saying he has pronouns. Which is why we have to take him all the way to the finals. We have to crown him the winner of the green hair and pronouns bracket to ruin his life. Because he DOES have pronouns. His whole character is about how he tries and fails to beat the pronouns allegations. We can’t let him beat them now!!! VOTE SAIONJI. Send his ass kicking and screaming to pronouns town

you know what time it is (pronouns time) polls

Hi everyone, sorry to do this but I’m in a pretty tough spot rn. We just extricated my youngest sibling from a dangerous household situation and brought them home, only for our dad to suddenly do a total heel turn and go back on his promise to house them 🙃 so us three siblings and two cats are now crammed into a single bedroom apartment living paycheck to paycheck without a car. We’re mostly doing okay but we really need to get the youngest to a doctor to diagnose what sounds like a case of fibromyalgia even worse than mine. I have a ko-fi and an INPRNT shop if anyone wants to help support some disabled queers and their cats

Some general life updates:

  • Little bro is now seeing a specialist and in the process of fibro diagnosis
  • Little bro also has a car now but uh. It’s complicated. He shares it, it is not in his possession most of the time
  • We may be about to try and fit a fourth person in this apartment 😭 that makes four disabled queers and two cats + a third cat we are going to try and figure out how to find him a temporary caretaker until housing is settled
  • Said third cat needs potentially a lot of veterinary care first

Sorry to keep bringing this back and thanks very much to everyone who has been so kind so far 💙

More life updates:

  • Little bro has got his diagnosis and is on medication that has vastly improved his chronic pain!! Yay!!!! Thanks so much to everyone who donated while we were in the process of getting him to his consultations, it helped so much 💙
  • The car is also back in little bro’s possession!! Unfortunately it is in dire need of repairs (new gasket, oil leak cleanup, possibly new wheels?) and so is currently not in drivable condition
  • Person number four is indeed staying with us on and off now (and we’re very glad for that but also wishing we had better conditions to offer)
  • I am supposed to start physical therapy soon to manage some new pain flareups and idk yet how much that’s going to cost or how regularly I’ll need to go

Thanks again to everyone who’s helped out so far 💙💙

Updates

  • Physical therapy copay is $95 per session and they want me to come in at least once a week 🥲 they said twice a week would be ideal and I was like. That’s literally half my wages. That’s not gonna happen…
  • My cat Yarrow also managed to escape the apartment for a few days and she seems to be fine but I’d like to take her to a vet to make absolutely sure if possible

Thanks again 💙
