What's Anthy's beef with Kanae? Kanae is one of the only few people who haven't done anything to her outside of the influence of the black rose duels.
They have a really interesting (and very sad) dynamic tbh! I think part of it is just the inevitable result of Akio’s abuse/grooming. The anger and frustration of having to be quiet about it, and at Kanae’s ignorance. Anthy hating Kanae also makes things a lot easier for Akio, so he very likely encouraged/exacerbated those feelings on purpose… But on top of that, while Kanae tries very hard to keep (at least the appearance of) the peace, she admits in her elevator confession that no matter how she tries, she can’t bring herself to love Anthy. In fact, she scapegoats Anthy in exactly the way that Akio likely intended her to, blaming her father’s poisoning(?) on Anthy rather than on Akio, the one who actually stands to gain anything from her father’s decline/death.
I think Anthy’s feelings toward Kanae are probably complicated in the same way that her feelings toward Utena and Nanami are very complicated, but in Kanae’s case, she’s already resigned herself to the fact that there is no saving her, and also to the fact that Kanae will blame everything on Anthy rather than on Akio. That’s just the pattern that Anthy has known her whole life and has come to expect: the rose bride exists for the purpose of taking the million swords of the world’s hatred in the prince’s place. She can’t afford to feel any affection for Kanae in this situation 😔
Interestingly, Kanae’s duelist motif is white lilies, which are associated with Hera. I think the Zeus/Hera comparison with Akio and Kanae again brings attention to the way that Akio misdirects Kanae’s (and really everyone’s) fear and anger away from himself and onto Anthy 😔😔😔
